Convert International Driver License in Vietnam: What You Must Know in 2025

Introduction

If you’re traveling, living, or working in Vietnam, you may wonder:
Can I convert my International Driver Permit (IDP) to a Vietnamese license?
The short answer: It depends on what type of license you have.

This 2025 guide will walk you through everything you need to know about international driving documents in Vietnam—what’s accepted, what isn’t, and how to convert your license the right way.

⚠️ Note: An International Driving Permit (IDP) or IAA license is not eligible for direct conversion into a Vietnamese driver license.

1. Types of International Driving Licenses

1.1 IDP – International Driving Permit

  • Issued under the 1968 or 1949 Vienna Convention

  • Must be accompanied by your original national license

  • Valid for short-term tourist use only (up to 3 months)

  • Not a standalone document for driving

1.2 IAA – International Automobile Association License

  • Issued by a private organization

  • Not officially recognized under Vietnamese traffic law

  • Cannot be used for legal driving or conversion in Vietnam

Tourists may use an IDP + national license for up to 90 days, but it’s not valid for long-term stay or license conversion.

2. Can You Convert an International License in Vietnam?

No – IDP or IAA cannot be converted.

Vietnamese authorities only allow the conversion of valid national driver licenses (e.g. U.S., Germany, Korea, Japan, etc.). These must be original licenses issued by the transportation authority in your country.

You must have a valid, non-expired national license to begin the conversion process.

3. The Legal Alternative: Convert Your National Driver License

If you hold a national driver license from your home country, you can apply for a Vietnamese equivalent.

Required steps:

  • Translate & notarize your license into Vietnamese

  • Legalize the document (if required based on nationality)

  • Submit your application to the appropriate authority

No driving test is required if your documentation is complete and valid.

If you don’t have a national license, you must attend a driving school in Vietnam and start from the beginning.

4. Driving as a Tourist in Vietnam

If you’re visiting Vietnam short-term, here’s what you need to know:

  • You may drive with an IDP + your home country license

  • Your home country must be a Vienna Convention signatory

  • Maximum use: 3 months from the date of entry

  • You must carry both licenses together while driving

⚠️ Do not drive with just an IDP or IAA license.
Doing so could result in fines or your vehicle being impounded.
