How to Get a Vietnamese Driving License: Complete Guide 2025

Introduction

Whether you’re a foreign resident or a Vietnamese citizen, obtaining a valid Vietnamese driving license is essential for legal and safe transportation in Vietnam. This complete 2025 guide explains all available options — from enrolling in a local driving course to converting a valid foreign license.

⚠️ Driving without a valid license in Vietnam is illegal and may result in fines, legal penalties, or vehicle confiscation.

1. Who Needs a Vietnamese Driving License?

🔹 For Foreigners:

  • Living, working, or staying in Vietnam long-term

  • Holding a valid visa or temporary/permanent residence permit

  • Intending to drive motorbikes or cars legally

🔹 For Vietnamese Citizens:

  • Motorbike (A1): From 16 years old (under 175cc)

  • Motorbike (A2): From 18 years old (over 175cc)

  • Car (B1/B2): From 18 years old

2. Two Main Ways to Obtain a Vietnamese License

✅ Option 1: Take a Full Driving Course in Vietnam

This option is for people who do not already have a foreign license.

For Motorbike License (A1 or A2):

  • A1 (under 175cc): Requires a basic theory and driving skills test

  • A2 (over 175cc): Requires a more advanced test and medical check

For Car License (B1 or B2):

  • Enroll at a certified driving school in Vietnam

  • Complete theory lessons, road training, and simulator practice

  • Duration: 3–6 months depending on the school

  • Pass both the written and practical exams

📑 Required Documents:

  • For foreigners: Passport + Visa or Residence Card

  • For locals: Vietnamese ID (CMND/CCCD)

  • 6 passport-sized photos (3×4 cm)

  • Medical certificate (from a certified clinic)

  • Registration form (provided by the driving school)

✅ Option 2: Convert a Foreign Driver License

This is for individuals who already have a valid driver license from another country.

Steps to Convert:

  1. Translate and notarize your national license into Vietnamese

  2. Legalize the license (depending on country of issue)

  3. Submit your documents to the authorized traffic office

  4. Attend in-person verification (photo + signature)

  5. Receive a Vietnamese license within 7–10 business days

🔍 Note: Only national licenses can be converted.
IDPs (International Driving Permits) are not eligible for conversion.

3. Where to Apply for a Vietnamese License

You can apply at:

  • Department of Transport (Sở Giao Thông Vận Tải)

  • Official offices under the Ministry of Public Security, depending on your location

👤 Personal appearance is required to take a photo and confirm your signature.

4. License Categories in Vietnam

License Code Vehicle Type Minimum Age

A2 Motorbikes over 175cc 18+
B1 Automatic cars, private use only 18+
B2 Manual & automatic cars (business use) 18+
